LOST WAX METAL CASTING:
DESIGN & MAQUETTE
Based on initial concept, a small scale clay maquette is created that will act as a reference guide to the full size original sculpture. The maquette encapsulates the sculptures composition, the positioning of figures, postures & movement.
METAL CASTING
The wax duplicate is encased in plaster/silica based 'investment' mould and placed upside down in a kiln. The wax will melt out over a period of 40+ hours at 700 degrees celsius. Moulds are then re-supported and removed from kiln. Bronze is melted and poured into the investment moulds.
CLAY SCULPTING
Using the maquette as a guide, a full size version of the sculpture is created, known as the 'original'. This is done by creating a steel armature is constructed on top of which wood and then clay is applied. Sculpting the details into the clay.
MOULD MAKING/WAX WORK
A silicon rubber & plaster mould of the 'original' is made. Once the mould has been created. wax is then painted into the sections of the mould and assembled together to create a wax duplicate of the 'original' clay sculpture.
WELDING & FETTLING
After the casts have been 'broken out' of their investment moulds, all pour cups, sprews and air vents are cut off and any filing chiselling and fettling is done at this time. Sections that need to be welded together are done at this stage and welds are fettled down and re-texturized to match surface texture of the sculpture.
PATINATION
The final stage is to apply the patina using heat, and various chemical solutions in order to apply

We provide hand-worked metal fabrication services in bronze, brass, stainless steel, carbon steel and aluminum. As well as wood working and construction.

We love working on heritage restoration or historic replication of sculptures and ornamentation using traditional materials or modern composites.
